July 2025 – The Horizon Europe-funded project MobiSpaces held its final Impact Event today in Rome and online on 23 June 2025, bringing together policymakers, researchers, and innovators to celebrate three years of achievements in sustainable and privacy-preserving mobility data governance.
Under the coordination of Matteo Falsetta (GFT Technologies), MobiSpaces presented a holistic data platform built on AI-based operations, edge analytics, and federated learning. Designed to serve cities, maritime operators, and mobility providers, the platform advances Europe’s digital and green transitions.
Real-World Impact
Through pilot deployments across Europe, the project has:
- Reached over 60,000 citizens and collaborated with more than 60 organisations,
- Developed six key innovations recognised by the European Commission Innovation Radar,
- Produced open-source tools supporting modular, privacy-first data spaces.
“MobiSpaces proves that mobility data governance can be sustainable, scalable, and user-centric — a tangible step toward a digital and green Europe. With this project, we move from experimentation to the real capacity to operate federated, resilient, and cross-domain-ready data spaces. We brought data analytics where it matters most — into the core of urban and maritime mobility — with tools designed to meet real-world operational challenges. MobiSpaces has reached over 60,000 citizens, delivering solutions that improve air quality, transport efficiency, and maritime safety. From the air we breathe to the buses we ride, the project shows how data can create measurable public value when handled the right way. It stands as a concrete example of how European policies on data and mobility can be turned into applied, replicable innovations. And its results don’t end with the project: they are already ready to be adopted by cities, companies, and next-generation European initiatives.” says Matteo Falsetta, Programme Manager & MobiSpaces Coordinator.
Cutting-Edge Use Cases and Technologies
The event showcased three pilot demonstrations:
- iRoute focused on predictive analytics to optimise electric bus scheduling and battery health in the city of Genoa, Italy;
- SmartSense centred on air quality monitoring using traffic and emissions simulations in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece;
- CrowdSeaMapping focused on decentralised maritime safety through federated learning and sensor data.
And the MobiSpaces Edge Processing Toolkit that includes:
- MobiBench – for data preprocessing and augmentation;
- Future Location Prediction (FLP) – enabling edge-based, privacy-preserving trajectory forecasting;
- MobiEdge – a decentralised platform designed for autonomy, cost-efficiency, and resilience.
“Overall, the MobiSpaces Edge Processing toolkit showcased how optimised data processing analytics tools can be used to extract valuable insights from data in an in-situ way, ensuring strict data governance and enabling quick decision making without compromising the quality of the services that are executed in low-resource Edge environments.” says George Theodoropoulos, Ph.D Researcher and Project Manager at Data Science Lab, University of Piraeus
Expert Panel: Shaping the Future of Data Spaces
A high-level panel discussion featured representatives from Gaia-X 4FutureMobility, TANGO, TEADAL, and MobiSpaces. Key takeaways included:
- The transition from pilot projects to deployment-ready data spaces;
- The need for open-source reuse, clear documentation, and FAIR data principles;
- Calls for interoperable policy frameworks, reduced bureaucracy, and user-centric design;
- Recognition that international cooperation and cross-domain integration are essential for scaling.
Co-Creation Workshop: From Innovation to Exploitation
The afternoon featured a hands-on co-creation session with the MobiSpaces External Stakeholder Expert Board (ESEB) and developers of the project’s Key Exploitable Results (KERs). Discussions centred on:
- Business models and target markets for MobiSpaces innovations;
- Hybrid software/hardware approaches to deployment;
- Emphasis on clear communication, shared platforms, and measurable impact to maximise post-project sustainability.
